This favorite food of Tibetan monks is very inexpensive and widely available in our stores – yet it’s strangely not in high demand. Meanwhile, monks eat it every single day…
Tibetan monks are extraordinary people whose ascetic lifestyle, strong health, and longevity continue to amaze the world.
Although the local cuisine is not very diverse, it is known for its nutritional benefits. That’s why monks consume this “cheap” barley porridge daily!
Barley is an invaluable source of nutrients essential for growth, recovery, and maintaining good health.
Tibetans believe that barley best meets the body’s nutritional needs, boosts energy, makes the body feel light, and keeps the mind sharp.
Tibetan Monks’ Barley Porridge Recipe:
- Toast 1 cup of barley groats in a dry cast iron pan until golden brown. Do not add oil or butter.
- Meanwhile, boil 2 cups of water.
- Once the barley turns golden, transfer it to a deep ceramic bowl and pour the boiling water over it.
- Add salt to taste and wrap the bowl in a towel to let it steam.
- Once the grains have softened, add a bit of butter and vegetable oil. You may also add onions, if desired.
- Serve hot!
Finish your meal with a cup of green tea with ginger and honey.
Wishing you good health!
